Our Logo Design Explanation

By James Cullen,

The shape of the logo is that of a traditional Massachusetts police badge, commonly referred to as a Radiator Badge. The name comes from the badge's distinctive design, reminiscent of the radiator of a Model T automobile. It was popular from the 1890s through the 1950s, with peaks in the early 1900s, becoming iconic for Massachusetts law enforcement.

The knight chess piece was chosen as it is the only piece on the chessboard that does not move in a straight line. The L-shape movement of the piece symbolizes the dynamic, unpredictable, and often non-linear nature of real-world situations, which require creative approaches and adaptability. The knight also embodies the need for quick, smart, and flexible thinking to navigate complex situations and find a path to a positive outcome. It also exemplifies our ability as instructors to persuade, change and influence others.

The three stars across the base of the chess piece symbolize the rank of Deputy Chief which I held at my police department.

The words “Prepared” and “Empowered” along the bottom edge of the logo are indicative of the result of training, you will be prepared and empowered to take necessary actions to stay safe and survive in the face of a crisis.
